Ukhondo Service Foundation executive director Edgar Phiri has asked community members from Senior Chief Wasambo in Karonga District to construct houses for health workers to enable them to operate close to health facilities.

He made the call on Wednesday during a project exit meeting after being in the area for one year.

“We have trained health surveillance assistants (HSAs) and established health centre management committees and offices of hospital ombudsmen to check drug pilferage in the seven health centres in the area,” said Phiri.

Phiri: Sustain the gains

He, therefore, encouraged the people to construct houses for HSAs to sustain the gains of the project.

Wasambo Area Development Committee chairperson Happy Ndovi pledged to facilitate the construction of the houses to ease accommodation challenges for health workers.

“The project equipped people with skills to monitor medical drug supply in public hospitals,” he said.

Karonga District Health Office administrator Clement Gonthi said the project has achieved a lot in the area.

“We commend the project for establishing offices of the ombudsmen and others,” he said.

With funding from the European Union through Tilitonse Foundation and Royal Norwegian Embassy, the organisation was implementing a one-year Strengthening Transparency, Accountability and Oversight Project in seven health centres in Senior Chief Wasambo in the area.
